About Dremel
The Dremel Company, founded by Albert J. Dremel in 1932, is the world's leading manufacturer of rotary tools. Today, there are more than 17 million Dremel rotary tools currently in use, and that number is continually on the rise.
The history of the Dremel Company goes way back, beginning with Albert Dremel's invention of an electric razor blade sharpener, a tool that enjoyed immediate but short-lived success. Despite enormous razor blade price cuts that quickly destroyed Dremel's market for sharpeners, Albert remained undeterred.
He then came up with perhaps his greatest invention ever: a high-speed rotary tool that soon became known as the "Dremel Moto-Tool." This lightweight and versatile tool was a smashing success with hobby and craft people. Its users have called it many affectionate names throughout the years among them: "pocket machine shop" and "the electric Swiss Army knife."
Albert Dremel was also famous for his generosity. In 1948, he have his employees 30% year-end profit-sharing bonuses. The idea of profit sharing was very radical in those days, and Dremel was applauded for developing such a system. Dremel also introduced the idea that bosses owed their workers safe and comfortable work environments.
As innovative as Albert was, his ingenuity was nothing compared to that of the people who began to use Dremel rotary tools in a myriad of ways. The Defense Department used Dremel tools to create its first atomic bomb in the 1940s. Military doctors tapped them in the pioneering of dermal abrasion techniques to reduce scar tissue from battle wounds. Around the same time, the Dremel rotary tool began to be used as an electric tattoo remover. Since then, podorthists have found that the tool is useful for shoe inserts. Dentists now use it for crafting dentures. The tool is also popular in the entertainment industry; it appeared in the movie "Jurassic Park," appearing at the dig site of actors Sam Neill and Laura Dern.
Today, the tool that debuted as a hobbyist/craft tool is now available with more than 150 bits and accessories and is widely known as one of the most versatile tools ever invented.
